Sage 50 2015 V21

Sage 50 2015 V21

Every now and then our friends at Sage decide to issue a new version of their software that has some ‘hidden’ incompatibilities. I am not intending to be harsh here, but if you were a customer running Sage 50 2013 on your existing on-premise server and had the option/instruction to upgrade to Sage 50 2015 V21, you should reasonably expect it to just run on the incumbent kit.

Well for some clients the move to Sage 50 2015 V21 via an upgrade has proved troublesome. This applies particularly to those customers running Windows Small Business Server 2008 and 2011, which is blocked by default. Yes, I know these operating systems are getting old now and the recommended path for this kind of on-premise small business system would now be a deployment of Windows Server 2012 and a Hosted Exchange solution of some description, but this is simply not financially viable for some companies who need to sweat their assets.

So what is the issue? In summary Sage does not recommend the deployment of Sage 50 2015 V21 (and later versions) on a server that is also running resource hungry applications like Exchange. In fact Sage specifically state “running software like Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft SQL Server…will reduce the performance of Sage over a network”. This will have a performance impact on the server’s hard drives as they are constantly being read/written to by the Operating System, Page File and Exchange database – this is a lot of work, so having the Sage data there will hinder performance in terms of network speed, crashes and delays logging on.

The options from an on-premise perspective would therefore either be:-

1. Deploy a separate Dedicated Server to hold the Sage 50 data and according to Sage this needs to be Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

OR

2. Deploy a new Physical Host Server which is powerful enough to run Virtual Server Instances of Windows Server 2012 R2, Exchange and Sage 50.

The problem with both to these solutions is that they COST and require significant Capital Expenditure!

A cost effective alternative is Sage Hosting, whereby customers keep their existing server solution and host Sage 50 2015 V21 (and later versions) in the Cloud. Users would simply access and manage their Sage software by clicking on an icon on their Desktop and access data just the same. This costs a small monthly fee which can be incorporated in the company’s Operating Expenditure rather than having to commit to the Capital Expenditure of purchasing a new server.
